Green RoRo Shipping through Digital Innovation

ADOPTING AUTOMATION TO BECOME GREENER

Addressing challenges with robotics

The ROROGREEN project is a highly ambitious project that seeks to digitalize, automate, and optimize the end-to-end process of cargo stowage and operations for RoRo ships at ports. These efforts shall result in process efficiencies and emission reductions in the shipping industry.

As one of eight consortium partners, Lorenz Technology focuses on data capture and intelligent trailer localization with drones and mobile robots. The project continues our previous work on trailer detection with drones at DFDS terminals.

About the project

Optimize the green, digital ports

Roll-on-Roll-off (RORO) shipping is a particular type of shipping where cargo is driven or rolled to load vessels. Freights can be self-propelled (e.g., cars) or they can be stored inside trailers. When it comes to trailers, there are many challenges.

One challenge is the localization of the trailers. Port terminals are vast. Drivers often place trailers in arbitrary order, increasing ship loading times, loading costs, and CO2 emissions. Shipping companies have tried out various approaches to reduce these factors by digitalizing and tracking processes and assets. However, until today, a lot of manual work is involved to find the proper trailers on the terminal. Throughout the project, we will improve our trailer detection technology, adjust it for mobile robot usage, and operate DJI drones and Capra robots at DFDS terminals to test our solutions.

The ultimate goal is to enable Ferry Operators and their truck drivers to find trailers faster, allowing shipping companies to become more digital and sustainable in their daily operations.
